Searching for a weight loss coach usually turns up two kinds of result: a clinic selling injections and a directory selling your phone number. Apex is neither. It’s a private gym in Niagara County with coaches who write the training and the eating around each other, because that’s the only version that holds.
Anthony Kukovica has coached at Apex since 2013 and has clients in what he calls the three digit club, people who have lost more than 100 pounds. Here’s how the coaching actually works, what it costs, and the honest reason most weight loss attempts fail.
The Real Reason Weight Loss Fails
It isn’t the workout. Ask a coach who has watched it happen for 13 years and the answer doesn’t change.
The most common reason somebody fails at weight loss is not following the diet. Exercise is thirty or sixty minutes of your day, especially when you have a trainer holding you accountable. It’s the other twenty three hours, when you have to follow a program to eat, that falls on your shoulders. Ultimately it’s a twenty four hour a day job.

Read what that says about hiring help. A coach can hold you accountable for 30 minutes, three times a week. That’s roughly 1 percent of your week. Anyone selling you a training package as a weight loss solution on its own is selling you 1 percent.
What the other 99 percent needs is a plan you can actually run, and somebody checking whether you ran it. That’s the job.
What “Toning Up” Actually Means
Almost everybody who walks in says they want to tone up, and almost nobody defines it. Anthony does.
What they’re saying is they would like to see more muscle tone and less subcutaneous fat. It can be obtained two ways. It’s a matter of decreasing body fat and increasing muscle tone.

This matters practically, because the two halves need different work. Losing fat is mostly what you eat. Building the tone underneath is resistance training. A plan that only does cardio gets you smaller without the shape people are actually asking for, which is why so many people lose weight and still don’t like the mirror.
What Weight Loss Coaching at Apex Involves
It starts with a free consultation covering medical background, goals, current eating habits, dietary restrictions, and measurements. That’s the information needed to write anything useful, and it happens before you pay for a session.
From there it’s coached sessions built on resistance training, with nutrition targets set alongside them rather than handed over as a separate product. Programs get reworked about every six weeks, because the plan that produced results in month one stops being the right plan by month three.
What it is not: Apex trainers are not physical therapists, dietitians, or medical providers. Nobody here prescribes anything, treats a condition, or manages medication. If your weight loss is being handled clinically, the training runs alongside that, not instead of it.

You Do Not Have to Give Up Carbs
The single biggest objection to any eating plan is the fear of losing everything you like. Anthony takes that head on.
One of the biggest nutrition myths is “if I eat carbs I’ll be fat”, thinking you can never eat carbs and you have to only eat chicken, broccoli and brown rice. It’s just not true. I come from the standpoint that somebody can eat anything. It’s a matter of working it into your macros for the day, and what you eat around that to hit those numbers.

A plan built on foods you hate has a shelf life of about two weeks. One built around your actual diet, with the numbers adjusted, is the one still running at month six. That’s not a soft option, it’s the version that works.
What the First Six Months Look Like
Fast at first, then slower, then steady if you keep going. That shape catches people out, so it’s worth knowing before you start.
Early weeks show a sharp drop that’s largely water. Month two and three settle into something slower and more real. Somewhere around month four most people hit a stall and decide it stopped working, when what actually happened is the program needed rewriting. Progress also stops being visible on the scale alone. Strength, movement quality and what you can do without stopping all keep moving.
Frequency is the other half. Anthony’s rule is a gap rule rather than a weekly target, which is easier to keep: never more than two days without exercise, which puts you at three sessions a week minimum. A common setup is one coached session plus two on your own, using your membership for the independent days.
What It Costs
| What | Price |
|---|---|
| One on one coaching, 30 minutes | $35 per session |
| One on one coaching, 60 minutes | $60 per session |
| Partner coaching, 30 minutes | $25 per person, per session |
| Gym membership | $45 per month, or $540 per year |
| First consultation | Free |
Sessions come in four week packages of 4, 8, 12, 16 or 20, so one to five a week. There’s no sign up fee, no cancellation fee, and no contract. Full detail is on the services and pricing page.
If cost is the deciding factor, the partner rate at $25 each for 30 minutes is the cheapest coached option, and training with somebody on the same schedule is one of the better predictors of still training six months later.
Common Questions
Is a weight loss coach the same as a personal trainer?
At Apex, yes. The same coaches write the training and set the nutrition targets. A separate “weight loss coach” who doesn’t program your training is handling half the problem.
Do you do meal plans?
Nutrition is handled as part of coaching rather than promoted as a standalone service. Bring your eating habits to the consultation and it gets built in.
How much weight can I expect to lose?
Nobody honest gives you a number before knowing your starting point, your medical background and how consistent you’ll be. What Anthony will say is that clients who follow the nutrition plan keep losing, and that the rate slows as you go. Anyone quoting you pounds per week on a web page is guessing.
I’ve never trained before. Is that a problem?
It’s the most common starting point. See personal training for beginners for what the first weeks look like.
